Young Women’s Challenges in South Sudan
I want to thank BC Global for the fantastic opportunity they have given to me to speak on behalf of the young women of South Sudan. My name is Estella Kaku, and I am 15 years old in the 9th grade of high school. Because of Coronavirus, all schools were closed, the students have to take the assignment home and returned it to school since there is no electricity or public internet. As a teenage girl, I am grateful for the technology that has allowed me to share young women’s concerns through this platform from a distance across the world.
Preface:
In South Sudan, education barriers are very high, including lack of infrastructure, transportation, high poverty rate, and health facilities. Only one girl in ten completes primary education, and girls comprise just a third of the secondary school population.
Mostly, a teenage girl between thirteen (13) and nineteen (19) years old is under the age of adolescence. Not only education challenges that are facing girls, but also, there are some problems related to teenage girls such as acceptance and stress. Even the most self-assured girls struggle with acceptance from time to time. Stress, the pressure teens face from schools, parents, and peers can create ongoing stress patterns.
To give a solution, a teenager needs some essential nutrients to help them in their bodies, such as energy, fats and oils, and proteins. If a teenager reaches 13 and 19, she likes to hear words like you’re beautiful, I love you, etc.
The Negative and Positive Attitudes of Parents Toward Girls in South Sudanese Society
Good parents send their girls to school to be a better person in the future. They encourage girls to study hard, and not only that, but they provide for the girl’s school materials despite that. They also advise them about health education and the environment, for example, how to take care of themselves.
For some or a majority of parents in our society, they don’t have enough time to encourage their daughters to study or go to school. Girls are considered marital assets and are not encouraged to participate in society. The more the girls become young women, the more pleased they are to see their girl marry a wealthy man. The poverty rate among women is a very high rate than men. When a girl divorces for any reason, she will marry as a second wife because parallel marriage is more common in South Sudan.
In general, the country’s poverty rate is higher. Most families can’t afford to send their children to school. Some parents prefer to send boys to a school than girls. For some parents, girls remain at home to take care of their siblings, which leads to girls’ early marriage or young women’s tendency to get pregnant during schooling when there’s poverty, limited educational opportunities, or inadequate medical care.
Girls With Disability
Parents most often brand disabled girls as a disgrace to the family when they lose patience in treating them. And when the disability becomes permanent, the disabled girl tends to hide or isolate herself from the world due to discrimination or being called of less value to the family. This negative attitude contributes to more pressure and stress due to verbal and physical abuse by their siblings or families.

Girls’ Participation in Sport
The rapid development or changes in technology, social media, and advocacy for women’s rights in most developed countries have pushed for a majority of the country’s political and religious leaders to reconsider the role of women’s participation in sports. For example, in some schools, teachers are pushing young women to participate in various sports activities. Simultaneously, in some other areas in Juba, BC Global, Football International, and other football clubs joined partners to promote football sports under Future Stars Football Acadamy( FSFA) for young women’s and men’s education and empowerment.
Through girls’ participation in sports, girls will develop skills and promote lifelong athletic involvement because of the psychological, sociologic, and physiologic benefits associated with exercise. The Future of the Young Girls
In my opinion, by giving education to girls, communities gain a tool to break the cycle of intergenerational poverty, health control such as in transmitted diseases like HIV and early marriage. It’s necessary to educate a girl because you have educated the entire nation if you educate a girl.
Recommendations:
* Allow schools to increase enrollment of drop-out young women by improving access, retention, and completion among primary and secondary schoolgirls to change female education perceptions.
* South Sudan has suffered a loss of three generations of the educated due to civil unrest. We encourage the continued education for adults, especially mothers, to be a role model to their children.
* To facilities the sustainability of education, the International Non-governmental organizations ( NGOs) should partner with the local agencies to be liable to their communities to continue assessing for better education improvement.
