Girls Participation in Sports in South Sudan
In most communities in South Sudan, girls are considered as marital assets and are not encouraged to participate in social and economic livelihood of the community. They are marginalized of their rights to education, ownership and choice. Other communities practice cultural taboos that strictly forbids the girls and women from participation and these include, but not limited to eating certain foods, participation in sporting and education activities.
The “Positive and Stand Up Attitude’’
The change in technology and the advocacy for the rights of women in most countries have pushed for majority of these women to know their rights and always stand for it. Many women are now owners and managers of big firms and organizations.
In the sports world, the likes of Serena Williams and so many have influence in the faces of so many women and this have created a positive attitude and thinking towards the love for the game of sports especially in South Sudan.
Equal participation opportunities for male and female students in secondary and institutions of higher education, the real reason we want equal opportunity for our daughters to play sports is so they too can derive the psychological and sociological benefits of sports participation. Sport has been one of the most important socio-cultural learning experiences for youngsters in the community. The benefits are as follow;
- High school girls who play sports are less likely to be involved in an unintended pregnancy; more likely to get better grades in school and more likely to graduate than girls who do not play sports.
- Girls and women who play sports have higher levels of confidence and self-esteem and lower levels of depression.
- Girls and women who play sports have a more positive body image and experience higher states of psychological well-being than girls and women who do not play sports.
- Sport is where boys and girls have traditionally learned about teamwork, goal-setting, the pursuit of excellence in performance and other achievement-oriented behaviours—critical skills necessary for success in the workplace.
What BC Global can do to enhance the capacity of the girls in South Sudan?
BC Global is advocating for equal rights through the participation of women and girls in socioeconomic life in their communities and this can be done through;
- Encouraging and supporting the girls in education through payment for their tuition fees and scholastic materials
- Mentorship and offer them career guidance in order to be able to have a better choice for their future
- Provision of menstrual hygiene management kits
- Provision of sports training equipment for passionate athletes
- Developing and supporting exchange programs either within or internationally in order for them to experience the realities of life.
- Supporting the girls in the respective teams or soccer academies to form their clubs to act as their main platform for sharing information in relation to body development and peer relation.

One of our short-term goals is to focus on youth improvement programs. Especially for Sanitation, Hygiene for the girls who are in the sport through our academy ( FSFA) and Young Changer Plus aiming to develops young people’s ability to make decisions and plan for the future, which increases their sense of self-worth and identity.
