Digging for Golden Rocks
Usually, when we dig the earth, we are searching for gold or uranium. It comes at a time when gold miners are overusing us to find an alternative for mineral gold. Digging mountains for gravel became an alternative to gold, while working on breaking rocks becomes challenging compared to the age wasted by it. In the meantime, seeing other kids makes a difference by going to school or being supported by their relatives fortunate enough to send their kids to school for a better tomorrow. It is becoming life-threatening and mental torment whether to continue being a gold digger slave or to find a way for freedom.
In 2013, I became acquainted with a family man living in a tiny house with six children at the Imvepi, a refugee settlement camp in Northern Uganda.
He earns his living by digging rocks out of the mountain and breaking them into pieces as gravel using a hammer to sell them for a small amount of Ugandan Shilling to feed his family. I asked him if I could join him by staying at his house while helping him dig the rocks out and going to school simultaneously.
It seems I have good chemistry with my new parents. I always stay awake even during the night hours like a gatekeeper. My life at school looks very productive. I was excelling at my school to 8 grade. But in Uganda, most of the upper classes required laboratory work which we were missing in the refugee camps. I started doubling my working hours digging and breaking the rocks to transfer to the nearest schools in rural areas of Uganda under the government jurisdiction.
The more I work, it seems the life of school expectation is coming to an end. Fortunately, I met the BC Global Organization online to introduce myself and learn more about myself, school life, and my dreams for higher education.
The representative of BC Global granted me a scholarship to transfer to government schools in Uganda to pursue my education. Unfortunately, Covid 19 hit the world as badly as Uganda’s school locked down for another 42 days. I went back to the refugee camps with my newly good parents to dig the Golden rocks(gravels) and do other home activities.
Digging and breaking rocks at the age of 16 was the most tiresome job in my life. Physical breaking of rock by hammer is harmful, and it requires safety and precaution by trying to prevent stray pieces of stone from rolling out of your control that may harm your eyes. Before you begin breaking the rock, you should also examine your sledgehammer to make sure there are no cracks in the shaft or head that can become a chance that the hammer’s head may detach and hurt someone.
It took three weeks to prepare the rocks for sale at the price of 40,000 Ugandan’s Shilling (equivalent to $12), and we must divide this amount with my new parents as my earning for a school fee that is equivalent to $260 for one semester (one-year schooling fee). But it was amazing to live with such a humble and faithful family, even though I forgot to remember my deceased parents or my siblings whom I left in South Sudan, hoping to get a better education for them.
One thing I learned; life is a journey that has a lot of challenges and trials. If we keep striving and pushing through, then we can bypass every obstacle.
