Socioeconomic factors
- Negative cultural practices such as socialization in weddings, funerals and initiation ceremonies
- The undermining of the pandemic by ignoring the guidelines like social distancing, masking, washing hands and sanitizing
- Government reluctance to introduce total lockdown due to the lack of Economic Stimulus Package for citizens.
- The service industry is at risk as it loses clients, hence low gains
- Households income decreases leading to low standard of living
- Increased gender based violence; these include, but not limited to domestic violence, forced marriages, teenage pregnancies, excessive alcohol and drug consumption etcetera.
- Increased number of street children due to the increased levels of violence in the communities
- Closure of schools and no other alternative system of education such as online or virtual classes for children
- Relatives’ denial for burial of their beloved ones by government and those in charge of COVID19.
Political and security factor
- The pandemic has delayed the timeline for the implementation of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in South Sudan (RARCISS).
- Deterioration in security as a result of the poor economy- “survival of the fittest”
- Delay in formation of state government-Local or traditional leaders would have steered in the fight against the pandemic at the community level.
- The unified forces in the training centers have no access to information about COVID19 and how it is prevented due to ignorance.
- Politicizing the pandemic made it difficult to relay accurate information to the population and thus no coordination and collaboration among stakeholders.
- Corruption related to management of the funds, testing samples, releasing results. For instance, some healthcare officials request about 150-200$ for release of result(s) of an individual, printing of illegal COVID19-Free Certificates and sell to travelers.
Potentials
- The support by partners like National Nongovernmental Organizations, INGOs and UN agencies in the fight of the pandemic.
- The grants from strategic countries like USA, Australia, Europe etc
- Collaboration between ministry of health and key partners in the fight.
Recommendations
- Scaling-up current efforts exerted by partners
- Increase community ownership of COVID19 projects
- Provision of WASH facilities to vulnerable communities
