Message on the International Youth Day 2020
I would want to take this opportunity to salute all youth in South Sudan and the world in this very important day. It is a day that the South Sudanese youth are willing to celebrate in a peaceful and progressing environment. It is a day when the marginalized youth would want showcase their innovations and creativeness in the different sectors of the economy.
Frankly speaking, the youth are faced with myriad challenges and they lack opportunities ranging from education, health, employment and participation in both the private and public sectors. The South Sudanese youth aren’t like any other youth in the world, but rather used as assets for civil war, inter and intra-communal fights and cattle raiding in most communities. In respect to the cyclical conflicts, most youth have physically become impaired or lost lives in the process. Many are in refugee settlements in neighbouring countries or protection of civilian sites (PoCs).
Youth are vibrant and driving wheel in any economic development, but due to the lack of investments in key sectors that could engage the redundant labour in a more productive manner and as a results a number of youth are driven out of their communities into the streets of the capitals or towns found themselves participate in criminal activities like gambling, excessive alcohol and drug consumption, organized robbery and killings. Therefore, posing a threat to the security and stability of the country.
This international youth day came in a very disgraceful time when parts of the country are heavily flooded in particular Bor Jonglei, continuous wars in Equatoria, Bahr-el-gazel and Upper Nile. People lost lives, farms, and property and are exposed to severe hunger and health risks.
The COVID-19 pandemic and other infectious diseases have negatively impacted youth health and economic livelihoods in the country. With the poor healthcare system, the youth are exposed to huge health threats and hence affecting their economic productivity.
The double effect of the conflict and COVID-19 pandemic has hugely driven the youth out of their families due to the increasing gender based violence. The rate of teenage pregnancies is high among young girls because of the lockdown and economic crisis.
In order to arrest the situation in this critical time, the government and the opposition have to ensure that the revitalized agreement is implemented in letter and spirit. This will generate the dividend of sustainable peace and security. Additionally, investments in youth innovations such as education, sports and arts would harness the underprivileged burgeoning youth to opportunities in their lives.
