Advancing Youth Innovations for Peace and Social Cohesion in Local Communities
Youth is the centre of social and economic development of any society. In today’s world, many youth leaders have emerged in both the private and public sectors and this is because most societies have provided youngsters with all the opportunities necessary for their development.
In the South Sudan context, the conflict has created a wide gap towards youth inclusive participation in social, economic and political spheres. The education, health and life skills necessary for youth empowerment have not been a priority for the government. Due to the lack of opportunities youth tend to lose confidence and most of them start to engage in immoral activities such as gambling, excessive drug and alcohol consumption and robbery.
Youth have been the epicentre force for the warring parties in South Sudan. They have been recruited in both sides and used as a weapon of war and as a result, they lost lives in the battlefield. In respect to their utilization as fighters, they have also lost sense of nationalism and hence become more aligned to their tribes rather than the nation.
The organized crimes in South Sudan : The Case of Niggars & Toronto B oys
The continued crisis has created more negativities in relation to youth development as such they have no access to opportunities for their positive growth in the society. The few available opportunities are offered to either the associates or relatives of the elites making it difficult for majority to access.
With the above, youngsters start to gang up as groups that mainly pose threats to their communities. These groups have names similar to the gangs in the USA, Mexico etc. The activities they indulge in are fights using machetes, knives, bottles and small arms. Some of the threats lodged in their communities include but not limited to attacking schools, markets and social gatherings. For the Toronto boys , they steal peoples’ property using motorbikes while riding in a high speed and sometimes involved in tragic accidents.
Despite of public outcry to the government to combat these crimes, there is no attention paid by the authorities and the culprits sometimes released without charges.
The innovations in advancing peace and social cohesion
Many young leaders have created various initiatives and platforms for peace and social cohesion advocacy in the communities. These young leaders have in mind and heart the nation, but not tribe. They engage in educative radio talk shows, sports, performances such as dances, drama and comedy that send strong message in respect to peace.
My Personal Perspective; ( Sports as a unifying factor)
Sports has been the most unifying element in today’s world. It has brought people from different races, religion, political affiliations, age, and gender. Many nations have been members to their local, national, regional and international sporting bodies. The likes of FIFA, UEFA, Olympic Federation and so forth.
In south Sudan, the youth love sports and with that engage their times in either direct participation of spectating the game. This diverts their focus of tribal fights or hate speech towards each other to productively utilize their time in and off the field.
In my local area, I am a member of a soccer team and also helped in the initiation of Rock City Youth Tournament with a focus on peace building. The teams that participate bring players who are non-registered in Juba local league to participate in the tournament. We also encourage the talented youngsters who have been engaged in bad practices to be part of it-meaning crimes are reduced in the communities as message of peace is preached during the event.
During the competition, we also sandwich in activities such as music dance and drama, comedy and other youth performances regarding peace.
Conclusion;
I would like to take this profound opportunity to thank Mr.Francis Limbe for boldly encouraging me to write some pieces on issues affecting our communities in South Sudan. I also thank the BC-Global, USA for their spirit of peace and unity and their vision to realize that there is sustainable peace in the country.
